Let's Talk - Reach Out to Us!

2023, a year of grit and determination

In 2023, our determined efforts resulted in a significant reduction in crime, thanks to the commitment and hard work of our patrollers.

Throughout the year, the NHW carried out a total of 434 scheduled patrols and 230 ad-hoc patrols. Our 69 patrollers spent approximately R140 000 to conduct these patrols, showing our dedication to improving the safety of our community.

However, this amount does not account for the time and sacrifices made by our patrollers, who often leave their families at 2 am to patrol the streets before heading to their demanding professions.

In addition to our scheduled and Ad-Hoc Patrols we completed the below community outreach and safety initiatives.

  • The NHW co-ordinated 3 bush walks and participated in 14 ad-hoc bush walks to survey and report the scale of land invasion in the Malacca Road and Ryde Place bushes;
  • We organized an additional 8 ad-hoc bush walks in Bauhinia Bush, Virginia Bush, and the Sentech Bush at the top of Elderberry Drive to pursue suspects and search for any signs of habitation.
  • In addition the NHW secured our area during a certain political party's planned national shutdown on the 20th of March 2023, with our patrollers stationed at strategic points from 00:00 to 07:00am.
  • We went out and directed traffic and helped our community in disruptive weather.
  • We prevented theft of our overhead cables through well planned and executed operations.
  • We stopped and questioned 159 suspicious loiterers which lead to the arrest of 14 suspects in collaboration with Marshall Security, Blue Security, ADT and Mzanzi Securifire.
  • We participated in 4 feeding scheme initiatives.
  • We reported 439 open gates to various security companies.
  • We assisted 53 members of the Glen An-Hills Community.
  • We reported 49 Water leaks whilst on patrols.

FUTURE PLANNING

The Glen An-Hills NHW Non-profit Organisation

Despite our best efforts recruiting new NHW Patrollers has been challenging.

Only 4% of households actively participate in our mission to create a safer and friendlier neighbourhood. We believe that if every household united and prioritized their family's safety, we could achieve so much more.

To address this issue, we are launching the Glen An-Hills NHW Non-profit Organization. We understand that not everyone can participate in patrols due to family or work commitments, age, or health. The NPO will focus on three critical community safety initiatives that will require contributions from residents.

Tier 1: The creation of the Glen An-Hills Virtual Estate

Tier 1 will focus on implementing Artificial Intelligence Cameras that utilize advanced deep-learning algorithms to detect human and vehicle presence in real-time. These cameras will send immediate alerts to both patrollers and security companies if any predetermined boundaries are breached, significantly reducing false alarms and enabling us to prioritize resources towards genuine threats. We have pinpointed the 16 access points to Glen Hills and Glen Anil, where the installation of these cameras will establish a highly effective crime prevention solution owned by the Glen An-Hills Community.

Tier 2: Unrest and Disruptive Weather Preparedness

This focuses on equipment for to be better prepared for future bouts of unrest and disruptive weather. Equipment such as bulletproof vests, riot shields, and air filtration masks will be acquired to protect our community during periods of unrest. Less-lethal paintball markers and a mobile CO2 filling station will be used to aid in crowd control. During periods of disruptive weather an emergency kit of traffic control equipment, tools and PPE is essential.

Tier 3: Fence off problematic areas

There are far too many sites where municipal fencing is either porous or non-existent.

Tier 3 aims to fence off problematic areas where criminals enter or exit our community, improving overall security.
